Cumbiana Habitat

Inspired by Carlos Vives’ musical tribute to amphibious cultures, this project focuses on the communities of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta — a key ecosystem in the Colombian Caribbean. The most emblematic initiative has been providing access to clean water and basic sanitation in the stilt community of Buenavista. But this goes beyond infrastructure — it’s a comprehensive effort to improve housing conditions while preserving cultural identity.

Thanks to the technical support of the water and sanitation team from CAF – Development Bank of Latin America, and guidance from experts like researcher Carlos Arias (University of Aarhus, Denmark), the project integrates nature-based solutions. It also includes strategic alliances with local institutions like the Mayor’s Office, Aguas del Magdalena, Invemar, and the University of Magdalena. This experience has paved the way for an innovative development model in amphibious territories — blending sustainability, cultural relevance, and community wellbeing.
